Background

Forty-Five Years of Building. A Brand Worth Showing Off.

Edgell Building has been constructing custom homes in Western Montana since 1979. David Edgell started the company as a small remodeling operation in Missoula. Attention to detail, innovative thinking, and an unwillingness to cut corners turned it into one of the most respected builders in the state. Today his son Mark runs the business, and the Edgell name means something specific in this market: quality you can trust.

When Mark reached out, the goal was straightforward. Edgell had an incredible portfolio of homes and a reputation built over four decades, and they wanted a website that put that work front and center. Something that felt as considered as the homes themselves. A place where the photography could breathe and prospective clients could understand the caliber of the work before they ever picked up the phone.

The opportunity was clear. Build something that matches what Edgell has already earned.

Process

Let the Homes Do the Talking

The first thing I did was stop trying to write a bunch of copy. Edgell's homes sell themselves. The photography from their projects is stunning — the kind of images where you stop scrolling. My job was to build a frame that stayed out of the way and let that work breathe.

I built the site on Squarespace using custom code — HTML, CSS, and JavaScript injected throughout to get the exact layout and behavior the project needed. This isn't a drag-and-drop template. Every section was hand-built to match the quality of the homes.

The structure is simple on purpose. A full-screen photo gallery leads the homepage. The residences page showcases their portfolio. The about page tells the family story. The contact page makes it easy to start a conversation. No clutter. No unnecessary pages. Just the information someone needs to decide this is the builder they want to call.

Design

Built for the Work, Not Around It

The design palette came directly from the homes themselves. Warm neutrals, clean lines, generous whitespace. The typography is quiet and confident — it doesn't compete with the photography. The layout uses scale intentionally. When someone opens the site, the first thing they see is a floor-to-ceiling image of an Edgell home. That's the pitch. Everything else is supporting information.

The navigation is four items: Home, About, Residences, Contact. That's it. A builder with 45 years of history and multiple Parade of Homes awards doesn't need twelve pages. They need four good ones.

I paid attention to how the site felt on a phone. Someone sitting across from their architect at a coffee shop, pulling up Edgell's site to show them what they're after — that experience had to be seamless. Large images that load fast, touch-friendly navigation, and copy that reads clean on a small screen.

What Went Into the Build

Custom Code on Squarespace

Hand-coded HTML, CSS, and JavaScript on the Squarespace platform. Every section built from scratch to match the precision of the homes themselves.

Photography-First Layout

Full-screen image galleries, scroll-driven photo experiences, and a residences page designed to showcase each home as a distinct body of work.

Mobile Performance

Compressed images, clean code, and a layout built to load fast on cell data. The site works as well on a phone at a job site as it does on a desktop.

Client Testimonials

Structured testimonial sections that build trust with real voices from real homeowners. Not stock quotes. Real people talking about real experiences.

Simple Navigation

Four pages. No bloat. Every click leads somewhere useful. The site respects a visitor's time the same way Edgell respects a client's budget.

Ongoing Support

When Edgell needs updates — new project photos, fresh testimonials, copy changes — I handle it. One call and it's done. No ticket systems, no waiting.

Outcome

A Site That Matches the Homes

Edgell Building has spent 45 years earning a reputation in Western Montana. The new site puts that reputation online the way it deserves. It leads with the photography, tells the family story without overexplaining it, and gives prospective clients a clear path from interest to conversation.

For a builder whose work speaks for itself, the website just needed to stop getting in the way.
